The Guardians of Martock Church, Concert in All Saints' Church

Thursday 14th March 2019 at 7.30pm

Wessex Big Band

The band was started back in 1976 by Alan Brown, BEM, but only took its present name in 1986. His enthusiasm and drive inspired countless local musicians of all abilities to take part and perform with the band. He remained in charge until 2016 when the leadership was taken over by the professional musician Paul Chousmer.

The band is now 24-strong and comprises a brass section of 6 trumpets & 3 trombones and a saxophone section of 4 alto, 5 tenor & one baritone, with 2 bass and one rhythm guitar plus keyboard, drums & a lady vocalist. They rehearse weekly and perform concerts 4 to 6 times per year, the shortage of large venues being the limiting factor. They have toured the USA twice and Europe twice and have performed at the Bude Jazz Festival

The band plays melodies made famous by the bands of Benny Goodman, Bob Crosby, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Count Basie and Glenn Miller in the pre-war period as well as by post-war bands such as Stan Kenton, Ted Heath and James Last. They now have a catalogue of over 300 music scores including some popular and contemporary music,
